Who doesn’t love SUP yoga!  Stand Up Paddle boarding is all the rage.  Adding yoga to the SUP experience is the perfect marriage of fitness, fun, and mindfulness on a beautiful, serene body of water.  Karma SUPtra is an extension of that love, indoors.

SUP Paddleboarding on Water

SUP is the much loved acronym for Stand Up Paddle boarding and is similar to rowing a kayak, except the user stands up.  Done on placid lakes to raging rapids, navigating the movement of the water while staying erect enables balance and strength, so SUP has become a sport of choice for a wide range of ages and abilities, and is equally loved by both genders.

Believed to have originated in Hawaii amongst surfers who used paddles to navigate the waves, SUP has been in existence since the mid 2000’s.  Looking to further expand on the SUP experience, Yoga enthusiasts have added yoga practice to the sport of SUP, which has gained rapid interest while moving gradually northward.

But wait!  Here in Canada and the northern United States our water loving season lasts only 3 to 4 months, if we’re lucky.  SUPing in the winter on a frozen lake is no fun at all, and with Fall biting at our heels we need to find an alternative.

Karma SUPtra founder Julie Thayer with SUP Yoga boards

Lucky for us here at TryBelle Magazine we met Julie Thayer, yoga teacher, studio owner at Vitality Yoga, and founder of Karma SUPtra.  Karma SUPtra is a revolutionary new product that allows us to combine our love of SUP and Yoga, right here on land, INDOORS!  This Canadian made, innovative new product offers us the chance to meet our fitness goals, and SUP Yoga away to our hearts content without falling into a freezing lake.

Karma SUPtra indoor yoga boards

Karma SUPtra boards sit on three inflatable discs that mimic the movements of SUP on water, with no need for a paddle.  The cushions assist in increasing or decreasing the stability and challenge of the board. Board dimensions are optimized to ensure space for proper alignment in yoga poses, and the top features a yoga mat surface to reduce slippage. Going into yoga poses on these boards allows us to extend our yoga practice, identify and manage our compensations, and work our core to find that balance.

When in a specific asana, using the Karma SUPtra board identifies imbalances that we may not notice in our mat practice.  Engaging our core and managing our compensations appropriately comes naturally on the Karma SUPtra board, moving you further along in your yoga and SUP practice, and even preparing you for SUP Yoga on water in time for next summer.  Yes, I’m always looking ahead to sunnier days.

I tried the Karma SUPtra Namaste board, and I have to say I loved every minute of it.  From warrior pose to a full Surya Namaskar flow I was able to pursue stability, and noticed a few imbalances in my posture that I had not yet noticed in my mat practice.  Thanks to the Karma SUPtra board I am working on correcting these postures.  And my headstand?  Hmmmm, let’s not go there.  We’ll leave that to the real pros like Julie.
